Shifting the Focus discusses the proposition and potential development of a “software-agnostic,” user-friendly workflow that integrates a database of embodied carbon data for “assembly-level systems” into concept-design level 3D models. This workflow would enable architects and designers to test options early and provide dynamic Early Carbon Intelligence (ECI), facilitating more informed decision making and building stakeholder confidence in early carbon outcomes.
Despite the availability of numerous plugins, software solutions, and toolkits, many architects and designers still cannot quickly perform iterative carbon analysis within their early-stage designs. This gap highlights the need for a new approach.
By leveraging the 2050 Materials database and Morris+Company’s architectural expertise, we propose a strategy that enables architects and designers to better investigate their designs and make informed material choices by harnessing Early Carbon Intelligence. This paper examines the merits of this approach, explores ways to improve the balance between speed, accuracy, and confidence in Early Carbon Intelligence, and outlines the next steps required for further development.
